The Anderson and Shoal Creek Corner Has a New Upstairs

For years, the intersection where West Anderson Lane meets Shoal Creek Boulevard did its best work before dark. Coffee at Sorrento's, tacos at Eldorado, a Jack Allen's lunch, then home. After 7 p.m. it emptied out. In February 2026 that changed. A staircase lined in Persian tile now leads to a deep-blue dining room where kabobs arrive on hand-hammered brass. The corner has an upstairs.

If you already live inside the Burnet-to-MoPac, 45th-to-Anderson box, you have probably noticed the parking lot at 7858 Shoal Creek filling later than it used to. This is a short guide to what happened there, what is still around it, and why the whole intersection now rewards a plan.

The Upstairs Room That Changed the Calculus

Roya opened February 11 at 7858 Shoal Creek Blvd., perched above the North location of District near Anderson Lane, marking the evolution of a project that began as intimate pop-ups across the city back in 2018. The space belonged to Shortie's Pizza + Grinders before this, a corner-of-a-corner spot most residents drove past without thinking twice.

Chef Amir Hajimaleki is not a stranger to the block. He is a familiar name to Austinites through concepts like District Kitchen + Cocktails and Oasthouse Kitchen + Bar, and Roya represents his most upscale concept to date, leaning more into the intimate, polished atmosphere found at his cocktail bar, Daisy Lounge. Roya sits directly on top of District, which is the tell. He is not chasing a new neighborhood. He is stacking a fourth concept onto an intersection where he already operates three.

The menu is worth reading before you go. The opening lineup highlights dishes like Wild Mushroom Borani layered with garlic labneh and black garlic chili oil, Mahiche Gheymeh featuring saffron tomato braised lamb shank, and a Wagyu Chenjeh Kabob finished with fenugreek seasoning and tarragon chimichurri. The cocktail list keeps the theme: a Babajooni vodka martini with lemon and caviar, the turmeric forward Talla bourbon cocktail, and the nut infused Ajeel built with pistachio and walnut notes.

The room itself is the surprise. A staircase lined with authentic Persian tiles leads into a dimly lit, moody dining room layered in deep blue tones, dramatic archways, and statement chandeliers. The space was designed by Amir and his brother Ali, and blends modern design with Persian artistry through intricate tile work, rich textiles, deep blue tones, and curated pieces from Azerbaijani artist Alexei Antonov alongside local Austin artist Ed Booth.

"At its core, it's about the art of hospitality that's central to Persian culture. I wanted Roya to feel like being welcomed into someone's home, while offering a perspective beyond the stereotypes people often see."

If you want to plan a first visit, the schedule is straightforward. Roya opens for dinner Monday through Thursday 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Sundays 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Lunch and brunch services are planned for later months.

Why This Intersection, and Why Now

Look at what is already inside a three-minute walk of Roya's front door. At different corners of the same cross streets, locals may recognize Eldorado Cafe, Short Stop, and Jack Allen's Kitchen, and the block also holds District Kitchen + Cocktails, Oasthouse Kitchen + Bar, Keepers Coastal Kitchen, and as of 2024, the stylish Persian speakeasy Daisy Lounge.

Read that list slowly. Four of those rooms are run by the same chef. One is a 20-year Tex-Mex anchor. One is a dive. One is a Coastal seafood room. One is a Jack Allen's. That mix is why the intersection works now in a way it did not five years ago: the same square gives you a bar burger, a caviar service, a green enchilada, and a Persian tasting menu without moving your car.

Here is what actually sits on the corner as of mid-2026:

Spot What it is When it makes sense
Roya Upscale Persian, upstairs at 7858 Shoal Creek Anniversary, out-of-town guests, a real occasion
District Kitchen + Cocktails Neighborhood American, ground floor of the same building Tuesday dinner with kids
Daisy Lounge Persian speakeasy A drink before or after Roya
Oasthouse Kitchen + Bar Casual gastropub Group of six on a Thursday
Keepers Coastal Kitchen Seafood-forward Oysters after work
Eldorado Cafe Tex-Mex, over a decade in the same spot Weeknight enchiladas
Short Stop Longtime dive Nightcap that costs $6
Jack Allen's Kitchen (Anderson) Texas comfort Sunday brunch overflow

The interesting number here is not how many rooms sit at one intersection. It is how many are run by one operator. When a single restaurant group runs four concepts on one corner, the kitchen deliveries, the reservation systems, and the staff overlap. That is why Roya opened with the confidence of a fifth location rather than the fragility of a debut.

What Didn't Happen at 2917 W. Anderson

While the evening layer was building, the daytime one almost changed and then did not. In July 2025 Wheatsville Food Co-op announced it would take over the Fresh Plus at 2917 W. Anderson Ln. and the Fresh Plus in Hyde Park. Three months later the co-op reversed course. Wheatsville sent owners a bevy of updates regarding its high-profile upcoming location closure and expansion: the Guadalupe store at 3101 Guadalupe St. will close as planned at the end of its lease in 2026, but the co-op has decided to back out of its plan to buy the two new stores in North Austin.

For a resident, this is a quiet piece of good news. The Fresh Plus on Anderson stays a Fresh Plus. The corner does not lose its walkable everyday grocery while it gains an evening scene. That combination, a quick-in-and-out market next to a room with a caviar service, is unusual in Austin and worth noticing.

The Daytime Layer You Already Know

The old rhythm of the neighborhood has not gone anywhere. Sorrento's still sells drive-thru coffee that pairs with Tacodeli tacos if you get there early enough. Epicerie Cafe & Grocery is still the French-Louisiana breakfast on 45th. Upper Crust Bakery has been running scratch pastries for close to three decades. Lucy's Fried Chicken keeps a corner of Burnet Road perpetually smelling like a Sunday.

What is new is that the evening now matches. Before 2024 you drove to South Lamar or East Cesar Chavez for a room that felt designed. Now the design is a mile from your driveway. That is the shift worth naming.

A Weeknight Worth Planning

If you want to test the new geometry, here is a sequence that only became possible this year:

  1. Park once at Northcross around 6:15 and walk the Shoal Creek Greenbelt north to the Anderson crossing.
  2. Drink at Daisy Lounge from 6:45 to 7:30. Order the sour cherry margarita.
  3. Climb the tiled stairs at 7858 Shoal Creek for an 8 p.m. Roya reservation.
  4. Walk down for a nightcap at Short Stop. Total time in the car: about eleven minutes, round trip.

You could not have written that itinerary in 2023. You can now.

The Bigger Point for Residents

Neighborhood dining scenes usually mature in one of two ways. A single anchor opens and pulls satellites toward it over a decade. Or an operator quietly assembles a portfolio on one block and hits critical mass in a single season. Anderson and Shoal Creek is the second story. The corner did not need a new tenant. It needed one more room to justify the trip after dark, and that room turned out to be upstairs from a restaurant that was already there.

If you are curious about how a shift like this shows up in the way the neighborhood feels day to day, our Allandale overview is a good place to keep reading. For a wider picture of the north-central corridor, the Brentwood, Crestview and Allandale comparison walks through how the three neighborhoods differ block by block.

The Anderson and Shoal Creek corner has always been convenient. In 2026 it also became interesting after dark. That is a real change, and it is worth walking over to see for yourself before the reservation window tightens.
